      Be Prepared

The Guides of Shri Shikshayatan School work under the aegis of the Bharat Scouts and Guides, India. From the day of its inception in 2002, the Guides have been trained to live up to their motto ‘Be Prepared’ by being physically strong, mentally alert and morally upright. Throughout the year the Guides engage themselves in various activities pertaining to First Aid, Knotting and Lashing, Pioneering and various other guiding skills. They also carry out different community awareness programmes, render social service in the old age homes and even shoulder the responsibility of hoisting the flag on all national festivals. The Guides have participated in various campaigns like “Safe Drive, Safe Life”, Pinkathon- Run to spread awareness against Brest Cancer, Save the East Kolkata Wetlands, Say No To Plastic , to mention a few. They even organise special programmes to spread a smile among the specially abled children. Over the last few years they have made it a point to spread a cheer among the old inmates of St. Joseph’s Home during Christmas. The Rajya Puraskar Award, the highest State level award, is the prestigious award for which the Guides work over the years. Our guides are the proud recipients of this award which is presented by the Governor of West Bengal. Guiding teaches one to be self- reliant and self- disciplined. It imbibes in them a sense of empathy and patriotism to become responsible global citizens. Putting in the words of the founder of the movement, Lord Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell, ‘Scouting Guiding is all about character building’.

      ``My Journey``

I joined Shri Shikshayatan School, Primary Section, in June 1993 as an
assistant teacher. Since then it has been a long journey through the allies of
time. Maturing with time, I have traversed a long path….came across many
bends and turns, along with my school, which saw changes in systems,
      policies and faces.
Shri Shikshayatan School has become a prime attraction to parents wishing
to admit their daughters at this revered institution which overviews the
holistic development of their child, nurturing them from the very tender age
into passionate learners, caring individuals and empowered women of the
      society.
Today when I look back at my stint in this esteemed institution, I am
reminded of the famous lines by Robert Frost -

“The woods are lonely dark and deep
      I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep…….”

A Train of Moments Past and Present

Since the day I joined the Primary Department of Shri Shikshayatan School on August 16th 2002, it has been a great learning space for me. The first school head l met was my ideal, Ms. Sushma Sharma, Teacher-in –Charge of the Secondary and the Higher Secondary School. Then l met the Director-in-Charge of the Primary School, Ms. N Vincent. There was so much to learn from her. On one occasion she had said, “When you apologise, even though the fault is not yours, you rise”… a life–skill never forgotten... In May 2020, hybrid-learning was introduced- a combination of asynchronous you tube video lessons and real time Google Meet classes. Under the guidance of our school-heads, we teachers have attended several webinars and professional development programmes that have helped us sharpen our skills, upgrade our knowledge of pedagogy adopted in different countries that opened avenues for self- assessment and reflection . What a satisfaction it is to know that we are quite at par with the tenets of modern teaching-learning. May the School Flag fly high and may Shri Shikshayatan School gloriously march on…and we shall be marching together as we teachers of Shri Shikshayatan School are learners by choice.

      ``Virtual Tour: December 2020``

To provide relief to students during COVID restrictions, Shri Shikshayatan School provided an innovative link into the virtual tour that sparked intense interest among the students, as well as nurtured their thinking skills.
On 23rd December 2020, the students of LKG and UKG embarked on a virtual trip from the school building by bus to Victoria Memorial, Thakur Bari, the abode of the Rabindranath Tagore , the Howrah Bridge , St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Belur Math. UKG students were shown glimpses of the Alipore Zoo making use of the augmented reality tool and Nicco Park.
Classes I and II had their virtual tour from the school to Diamond Harbour. One reaching Diamond Harbour through Google Earth, a 360 degree panoramic view of the beautiful sun was put up along with sailing ships. Students virtually visited Muni’s Ashram, Bakkhali and Hotel Ffort, Raichak, Falta. Classes III to V were transported to the majestic Queen of the Hills – Darjeeling with the help of several applications like Nearpod, Google slides, YouTube and Google Earth.
The response of the students in this unique tour was overwhelmingly positive and they thoroughly enjoyed the freedom to explore particular aspects of a destination, specific to their individual interests.

Looking back over the last 16 years I am happy that I have been given different opportunities to grow. From an accounts person to HR department and now part of CBS for knowledge enhancement has been quite encouraging. The office atmosphere is truly remarkable and I love the inclusivity in terms of capacity building. In passing, I would like to add that I am an ex-student of Shri Shikshayatan College (BA).

Working with the teachers in the preparation of different events infuses in me a childlike enthusiasm and takes me back to my school life when I used to take part in my school events. The atmosphere of discipline, regularity and cleanliness helps me immensely in my personal growth. The tradition of celebrating the birthdays of the employees is a personal gesture, which makes us all feel important, and this is an experience which I never had earlier. This institution stood by the employees in one of the most unprecedented times that the mankind had experienced in the form of COVID-19 pandemic.
